“In a study, outreach workers found 15 homeless people, and simply asked them...”
– No idea if this would work at a larger scale, but it makes sense.  Giving the individuals a sense of financial freedom to pursue their goals and get themselves standing back up again… it’s better than handouts and less stifling than the “work for the charity” approach.  I...

The Best Fact
“Birds are Aves, which is part of the clade Theropoda, which is in Saurischia, which is in Dinosauria. Those birds outside our windows are dinosaurs. We can clear out the rest of our brains because we now have the best fact.” - Randall (XKCD)

How Democrats Can Become Relevant Again (And... →
marco: Republicans offered Democrats two more weeks before the doomsday shut-down. Democrats countered with four. Republicans held their ground. Democrats agreed to two. This is what passes for compromise in our nation’s capital. By Robert Reich. For the first two years of the Obama administration, I kept waiting, giving them and Congressional Democrats the benefit of the doubt that...

corruptpolitics: 1) Republicans not only want to reduce women’s access to abortion care, they’re actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven’t. 2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape,…

US government finally admits most piracy estimates... →
Piracy isn’t as big of a deal as you think.  It doesn’t cost the entertainment industries bajillions of dollars each year.  There are much more important issues to tackle; tar-and-feathering people who like music but can’t afford to pay hundreds of dollars a year to listen to it is stupid.

It pays to remember what made you sad →
Forgetting the cause of your sadness results in being sad longer.  If you remember the cause, you can always convince yourself that it’s “not that bad” but if you forget the cause, then it seems like *everything* is the cause.

Slippery slope fallacy →
I’m tired of seeing this everywhere.  Stop saying things like “OMG, if the government starts regulating X, soon they’ll be controlling everything!”  Challenge implicit premises.  Force a person to detail a *plausible* way in which such a progression could occur.  If they can’t, just walk away laughing.
